Vineyard
Shiraz and Tempranillo
Planted in 2018, Corang Estate vineyard is a 1ha block on a 50ha bushland property. Half the vineyard is planted with Shiraz and the other half Tempranillo vines; chosen because they are ideal to grow in the clay-loam soils of the region and because they are our two favourite red grape varieties! All the vines were sourced from cuttings from some of Southern NSW’s finest award-winning vineyards. There are two clones of Shiraz and four clones of Tempranillo, which helps to give diversity of flavour to the wines. In 2021 we harvested our first crop and blended the two varieties to make a beautiful rosé wine, which was launched in May 2021.
Location & Climate
The vineyard is at an elevation of 600m, located on the western slopes of the Budawang Mountains. Rainfall and temperatures are similar to that of the Canberra region. The vine rows run in a north-south orientation, perfect for capturing the maximum sunlight in this cool climate location.
Sustainability
At Corang Estate we are committed to caring for the land and have been implementing various sustainable practices to minimise our impact on the environment. To formalise this commitment, we joined the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program in 2021 with a view to becoming certified in coming years.
- All our electricity is generated from an off-grid solar system; our water pumps, irrigation system and our home are powered by this electricity.
- We introduced sheep to graze in the vineyard, which has some great benefits, firstly eating the grass and weeds, which saves us time and avoids the use of a petrol mower to keep the grass down, and then there’s the added benefit of sheep poo fertiliser!
