Sourced from one of the finest vineyards in Young, NSW, in the heart of the Hilltops region, at an elevation of around 600m.
Tempranillo is widely grown in Spain and underpins most of its finest wines, including those from the iconic regions of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Structurally, Tempranillo shares much in common with the famous Bordeaux variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. However its fruit favours speak more to red berry and cherry cola characters and often carry a savoury note.
Our Hilltops Tempranillo is packed full of rich, spicy red fruit with a savoury undertone. It is ripe and full flavoured with fine tannins and a long fleshy finish.
The fruit was sourced from Moppity Vineyard, and was picked late March at 13.5 be.
After picking, the fruit was crushed and destemmed into open top fermenters, where a warm even fermentation took place. Once pressed the wine was transferred to a mixture of 1-3 year old French oak barriques for 9 months.
Though drinking beautifully now, this fine wine will gain further complexity and interest over the next 3-5 years.
An ideal match for roasted vegetables, cured and barbecued meats, spicy pizza and tomato-based sauces.
Awards and Reviews
“Ripper drink. Nothing fancy, just super tasty and fresh feeling with juiciness, cherry and liquorice characters, a dusting of five spice, light peppery notes, a fine sheath of powdery tannins yet brisk and amaro-tinged acidity keeps things fresh. We have a great drink here!” 93/100 – Mike Bennie, Wine Business Magazine
“Sweetly fruited and beautifully perfumed, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, dark cherry, subtle spice and toasted almond characters with a lovely floral overtone. It’s succulent and fleshy on the palate, offering youthful fruit flavours together with silky texture and polished tannins, offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2025.” 93/100 – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
“Enticing ruby in colour, clear and bright. There are aromas of sweet red berries and a hint of spice along with savoury notes with some smoky overtones. The palate starts with layers of sweet red fruits that are balanced by clean acid. Overall, the mouthfeel is elegant and refined, with a clean long finish. 90 Points” – Stephen Read, Wine Matrix
